About This Role
Brown and Caldwell (BC) is seeking an experienced Health and Safety (H&S) Professional to join our Enterprise H&S team. In this role, you will report directly to the Enterprise Director of Health and Safety.
The H&S Business Partner performs multifaceted occupational health and workplace safety tasks and provides support for successful project delivery related to identifying, evaluating, eliminating and mitigating workplace hazards to prevent incidents. This includes support in the development, maintenance, and continual improvement of enterprise wide policies/programs, processes, systems and tools related to ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, client requirements, and standards within the organization. Work is performed independently under limited supervision with occasional guidance on complex or strategic issues.
The ideal candidate is an articulate communicator-both verbally and in writing-who brings strong organizational skills, technical aptitude, and a proactive mindset while balancing multiple priorities in a dynamic setting. Success in this role requires a collaborative approach, adaptability to shifting project demands, and the ability to develop systems and tools that align closely with the way people work. The successful candidate will play a key role in strengthening our safety culture, stewarding systems and processes, and driving continuous improvement in H&S performance across the enterprise.
Remote work within the United States is allowed; the ideal candidate will be located near a BC office for occasional in-person collaboration.
Responsibilities
• Provide coaching and support to functional areas, project teams, and/or employees on health and safety policies, procedures, and other guidance. This includes monitoring compliance, performance indicator tracking and/or reporting within the area of support.
• Conduct routine inspections, audits, and/or work observations to assist in identifying potential hazards in the workplace environment.
• Support the development of and/or administrative review of project-specific Health and Safety Plans, including conducting technical reviews for low to medium risk projects.
• Maintain, monitor, and support aspects of local office health and safety, including related policies and procedures.
• Support, as applicable to operational area and/or project, regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal health and safety standards, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), including hazardous waste operations and emergency response (HAZWOPER), and Mining Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) standards, identifying areas for improvement and implementing appropriate solutions with involved parties.
• Participate in the facilitation of company H&S Training program including leading development and implementation of employee training in partnership with the H&S team, the Business Units and Legal.
• Respond to incidents promptly, coordinating the necessary response using available resources including leading respective investigation and facilitating the development of associated actions to prevent reoccurrence.
• Provide guidance on health and safety management practices during field projects.
• Contribute to maintaining occupational health and workplace safety procedures and protocols.
• Maintain health and safety policies and procedures in accordance with governing standards and regulations.
• Support management of company personal protective equipment (PPE) and other similar programs.
• Provide basic ergonomic support and guidance to affected team members when needed.
• Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.
Mentorship
• May provide mentorship, guidance, support and knowledge-sharing to help less experienced team members develop their skills and grow in their roles.
Skills and Competencies
• Ability to complete complex assignments independently and with minimal supervision.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective relationship building and fostering collaboration with a variety of business partners.
• Strong communication and decision-making skills, with demonstrated ability to provide guidance within organizational policies, procedures, and other guidelines.
• Solid understanding of health and safety regulations and standards.
• Strong understanding of common hazards and minimum controls associated with water supply and wastewater (sanitary or process) treatment facilities (e.g., confined space entry, air monitoring, fall protection, etc.) and/or operations (e.g. investigation, remediation, O&M of treatment systems, etc.) that fall under the HAZWOPER standard (1910.120/1926.65).
